Lean in Daily Life: Why you are looking at snow

You may wonder (a few people have asked) why the header of this website (and the background of my computer) is a picture of snow.

No, I wasn’t missing Winter all Summer. I still have non-fond memories of the record 90 inches we got last year and my corner lot with a bus stop across the street from an elementary school (I have to be on top of my snow removal).

It is a picture at the trailhead of the Bright Angel Trail at the Grand Canyon. And it is more than just a gorgeous view.

The night before we hiked down there was a couple feet of snow and there was ice under the snow. I had never hiked on ice or snow. Lots of people canceled their plans given the conditions. We were still going. I stood in the spot of the picture for about an hour.

As I stood there I admired how beautiful it was, but also wondering if I was about to slip on the ice and fall to my death. That fear built for an hour, but then I took a step onto the trail and had no worries. I stepped into the unknown and had a phenomenal day.

The picture represents to not be afraid of the unknown, to put a foot out to understand the situation, and to enjoy the experience.

  1. And I thought it was because your best friend was from Siberia and some of my love of snow rubbed off on you after the years 😉

  2. 🙂 I will never forget how excited you were to have moved to Michigan from Florida. We had (and still do) very different feelings about snow and cold 😉
