Blogging on a Book: Inside the Mind of Toyota. Developing People: Start with Motivating

“Where motivation exists, technical knowledge and skills will follow.”

-Satoshi Hino, Inside the Mind of Toyota

“Production is the starting point for creating value and creating civilization. Without production there is no technological progress. Production always takes place by virtue of people and their accumulated know-how. Unless you nurture people, therefore, you can’t even begin working.” – Eiji Toyoda

“When we talk about ‘building people,’ we generally mean developing their technical knowledge and abilities. But … Eiji Toyoda was talking about building enthusiasm for the work. Where motivation exists, technical knowledge and skills will follow.” -Satoshi Hino, Inside the Mind of Toyota

Is it really just about motivating people? Daniel Pink has found three factors that lead to better performance and satisfaction: Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose:

autonomy mastery purpose

Are Toyoda and Hino talking about helping people have a Purpose?

How do Autonomy and Mastery fit in?

Can Autonomy be achieved through a system that enables people to solve their problems?

Can Mastery be achieved through having a deliberate approach  to improve skills while solving problems?

Are the ‘technical knowledge and skills’ that follow motivation the Mastery, which is achieved by having Autonomy to learn, improve, and solve problems?

Do we respect people by designing systems that lead to personal satisfaction?

Do Toyoda and Hino  emphasize motivation (Purpose) because Autonomy and Mastery are so ingrained in the culture and systems that support the culture they are a given and only motivation needs to be mentioned?

How do we support Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose to lead to better Performance and Personal Satisfaction?
